The Bourbon Tunnel

The Bourbon Tunnel (Galleria Borbonica) is an intricate network of underground passages, built in the 19th century during the reign of Ferdinand II of Bourbon. Originally designed as a secret escape route for the royal family, it connected the Royal Palace to the nearby military district.

During World War II, it served a very different purpose: it became a vital air-raid shelter for the local population. Thousands of citizens found refuge in its vast underground chambers, safe from the devastation above.

Today, the tunnel is open to the public and can be visited through guided tours. It offers a fascinating journey through centuries of history, from royal intrigue to wartime resilience, all hidden beneath the surface of Naples.
